Navdeep Singh | | Hi,
I have come across many major Wi-Fi service providers who offer Client Based Authentication software. What are the benefits of it over Web Based Authentication?

Vern Burke | | Well, for one thing, it would eliminate any browser compatibility issues.

Peter Rohman | | Are you inquiring about authentication such as LEAP, PEAP et al? When a client authenticates on a WI-FI with central authentication, it may be able to maintain that connection even when roaming between APs. It also provides a central authorization point meaning one security interface to manage. Some integrate with Active Directory (for instance) and ease the assignment of rights by user or groups much easier.
In a home user environment central authorization is overkill. In a business setting with multiple APs it should be strongly considered.Private Reply to Peter Rohman |

Ken Hilving | | Good points, Peter.
Advantages are case specific - business objectives driving the business requirements driving the technical objectives driving the technical requirements that form the the technical solution.
The question should be phrased as what are the features of client based authentication and what are the features of Web based authentication? The unique aspects of each will indicate the right choice for a given scenario. Private Reply to Ken Hilving |
