Michael Lemm | | Here's a couple updates on the Vonage vs Verizon situation and it's impact on Vonage.....
* Judge Orders Injunction Against Vonage - Then puts order on hold for two weeks
On the heels of their patent court loss against Verizon, a federal judge granted a permanent injunction against Vonage. He added, though, that he would hold off on signing the order for two weeks while Vonage organizes their appeal. The injunction would prevent Vonage from connecting to the PSTN, unless technological workarounds could be found. Vonage stocks stopped trading today after the announcement triggered a 6.2% drop.

* Vonage Sees Effects of Injunction in Plummeting Stocks - Record low for Vonage shares
After yesterday’s court decision for a permanent injunction against Vonage, the company’s stocks were reported to have dropped 6.2%. As of today, that number has climbed an additional 20%; this is a record low for Vonage stocks since shares were first sold to the public. What does this mean for those who don’t understand stock percentages? The market value of Vonage essentially decreased by over $4.5 million. In contrast, Verizon saw a slight increase in the value of stock shares.
[note: Vonage stock used to sell at $17.25/share in the last year. Yesterday it dropped as low as $2.98/share.]

So...where does Vonage and their customers go from here?

Steve Macke | | I use www.sunrocket.com they have 24/7 service and the rates are great. they come from the internet background.
They have a number of packages - the one I signed up for was 12 months with 3 months free for 199 - they also have a reward program - so tell them I recommended you.
The 911 service works great as well as voice mail - call waiting - caller ID - three way calling - follow me function - voice mail that emails you were ever you are.
All the Best

Ken Hilving | | The heart of the issue involves ownership of intellectual property (IP). Verizon felt Vonage was using technology they had patented, 7 specific items. The jury agreed on 3 of the patents. Vonage was hit with both a penalty for their theft of the IP and an ongoing lease fee based on Vonage revenue. The lease fee allows Vonage to stay in business but rewards Verizon for the use of their patents.
Verizon asked for a permanent injunction against Vonage making use of their IP, and the judge agreed but allows Vonage two weeks to appeal the verdicts before the injunction is imposed. I would suspect Verizon was looking at the impact of providing assistance to a competitor as harmful to their own business.

I doubt that Vonage is the only startup VoIP service provider using technology that someone else has patented. The logical step for Verizon is to use their awarded damages to defend their patents against other firms.
Perhaps it is time for VoIP service companies to do a patent search on their particular solutions, and try negotiating a resolution if they find their approach is owned by someone else?

mark adams | | I happen to agree that VOIP companies should take stock in their technology and double check everything. Vonage is working on a different technology that will keep their customers afloat. They also say Vonage customers will not experience any disruption of service.
I fel Vonage will come up with an alternate technology to keep themselves afloat. However to avoid similar troubles other VOIP start-ups should cover their backs unless they are willing to take the chance on a major lawsuit.
